't understand how these people cannot do their jobs that they're elected to. so i'm wondering what's your take on what's going on in washington? you're sitting in washington. >> right. the at least we have bipartisan agreement it's all nuts, right? everyone agrees this is ridiculous and in spite of what they say, they've been talking about it for months and years and there was ample talk about what a framework should be through the election, which wasn't that long ago. there's plenty of debate. to tie the two stories we have been talking wiabout together, there was a colin powerful doctrine that general schwartzkopf executed so well in the first gulf war. which was have an exit strategy and using overwhelming force. this congress had an exit strategy. they had the idea of overwhelming force, and they set themselves these limits. if they got through this deadline the pain would be so great on themself -- this is self-imposed -- they would find a way out. they have not executed their own strategy and been able to vote for their own leadership. what you have in washington just to take a step back

election, barack obama being re-elected not withstanding some significant economic concerns going into the beginning of 2012, or a year ago at the end of 2011, it was clear the president would have an uphill battle. and three things struck me as interesting. super packs, the billions raised to reshape voter thinking, and particularly senate and house races, you saw a real impact -- >> in our region. >> absolutely in our region. and that was the first thing that struck me, and the second was turnout. i was among those that believed the president would get 95 or 96% of the african-american vote, and it turned out to be the same. and the same with young voters. and nobody expected the turnout to be the same with young voters. so turnout was a big point in that regard. and lastly, the romney campaign, which was supposed to revolutionize the way politics were done, and the enormous amount of money he was able to raise and he was running for president for all intents and purposes for five years, and on election night it was one tremendous letdown for the governor and all of his supporte

there is a new prime minister in japan. he is shinzo abe, the japanese parliament elected him today five years after abe abruptly resigned from the job. he's japan's seventh prime minister in six years. alex reports from tokyo. >> reporter: a remarkable political comeback is now complete here in japan. shinzo abe is once again prime minister, elected in parliament on wednesday following his party's landslide victory in general elections earlier this month. he has now taken the reins and unveiled his cabinet as well, which includes former prime minister aso who is deputy prime minister as well as finance minister. as the 58-year-old abe returns to the top post he vacated in 2007, his to-do list this time is very long. front and center is the economy, which has sputtered along in japan for the better part of two decades and is in recession once again. many will be watching to see how abe handling heightened tensions with china, as the two countries spar over disputed islands, as well as north korea, which defied the international community recently launching a rocket that skirted japanese territ
